SSL’s AWS 900 analogue workstation makes German debut

Producer and engineer Patrik Majer has become the first person in Germany to invest in a Solid State Logic AWS 900 analogue workstation, which he has installed in his studio in Berlin.
“The AWS 900 is a marvelous piece of equipment – very sophisticated and a great idea by the people at SSL,” Majer said. “I was already familiar with SSL consoles so getting to grips with the AWS 900 was really very easy. I truly believe this is the most modern way to record and I’m delighted with the results I’m achieving.”
Patrik Majer’s Freudenhaus Studio is located in the centre of Berlin and has a main control room, two recording rooms and a programming suite. It is equipped with a Pro Tools HD3 system, an Otari MTR90 and a selection of outboard equipment from manufacturers such as Helios, Focusrite, Lexicon, Avalon and EMT.
Majer says he decided to replace his Pro Control 24 with an AWS 900 because he wanted to combine great analogue sound with all the advantages the AWS 900 offers, such as better control room monitoring, more inputs and a ‘comfortable’ DAW controller. He also feels that the AWS 900’s summing circuitry gives him a much better sound than he can achieve by mixing in Pro Tools – a subject that is currently hotly debated in Germany.
“I recently carried out a number of tests to see whether I achieved a better sound using external summing amps, rather than mixing with the digital summing amps in Pro Tools,” he explained. “The results were certainly revealing. Using the AWS 900’s analogue circuitry it was possible to achieve more transparency, more depth and much more dynamic range. In my opinion the AWS 900 offers the perfect solution to this dilemma as it allows you to use your favourite DAW for mixing and sum in an analogue way.”
