'Sea Monsters' trilogy wins BAFTA Craft Award for Framestore

For the second successive year Framestore CFC has been recognised at the highest level for its digital artistry at the BAFTA Craft Awards, with the 2004 Visual Effects Award going to ‘Sea Monsters: A Walking With Giants Trilogy’.
The ceremony at the Dorchester on May 16 2004 was attended by a number of the Framestore CFC team. These included Mike Milne, Head of CG, who has supervised the ‘Walking With…’ projects since their inception in 1999, Fiona Walkinshaw, Director of Visual Effects Production, Animation Supervisor Max Tyrie and VFX Supervisors Tim Greenwood and George Roper.
The award was accepted on behalf of the Framestore CFC part of the team by Greenwood and Tyrie, along with Jamie Campbell (physical effects work) and Jez Gibson-Harris (Crawley Creatures).
In a short acceptance speech, Tyrie acknowledged, “This sort of work is done by a huge team, and we all knew that no single member of the team was responsible for the work – thank you from all of us.”
‘Sea Monsters’, which was first broadcast in the UK in November 2003, is a trilogy of programmes that continues the magnificent ongoing cycle of documentaries that started in 1999 with ‘Walking With Dinosaurs’. Produced by Impossible Pictures for the BBC, and directed by Jasper James, ‘Sea Monsters’ follows on from and continues to develop the revolutionary programme making techniques that have made this series such a phenomenal worldwide hit.
The trilogy is linked thematically and dramatically by a quest: Zoologist Nigel Marven sets out to visit the seven deadliest oceans of all time. Shot over seven months at locations around the world, the new shows required more than a year’s work by the Framestore CFC team as they laboured to deliver some 19 new prehistoric creatures to the screen.
The British Academy Television Craft Awards were created in 2000, when the decision was taken to give behind-the-scenes talent their own dedicated ceremony.
The Television Craft Awards have grown rapidly in the space of a few years, from a small ceremony at BAFTA to the more glamorous locations of the Dorchester.
