Critics Passing Mourned By Irish Film Board

The passing of a well-known Irish film figure has been marked by the country's official cinematic organisation.
The 'closing credits' came as board and staff members at Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board said this week that they wished to extend their sympathies to the family and friends of film critic Michael Dwyer on hearing of his death on January 1st.
An official statement said that Michael Dwyer was a world-class film critic who provided tremendous support for the Irish industry over the past three decades.
"He championed many young Irish filmmakers over the years and his endorsement of particular Irish films and filmmakers carried great respect in the international film community," the statement said.
"His enthusiasm for cinema from all over the world was at the heart of his work as a journalist and as founder of the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival.
"This contagious enthusiasm helped to foster new Irish audiences for independent cinema throughout his lifetime," said James Morris, Chairman, Bord Scannán na hEireann/the Irish Film Board.
His death is a huge loss to his partner Brian, his family, the Irish film industry and to all who knew him. His good humour and passion for film will be greatly missed by all.
