New Vision Television Commissions Bevy Of Quantel Newsroom Solutions In Four US Affiliates

US Television broadcasting group, New Vision Television, has acquired four Quantel Newsbox HD server-based news production systems for its following stations: CBS affiliate KOIN, Portland, OR; ABC affiliate WJCL, Savannah, GA; NBC affiliate KSNW, Wichita, KS and NBC affiliate KSNT, Topeka, KS.
New Vision Television continues to expand its broadcast footprint, with 17 affiliated television stations owned or managed in diverse markets such as Portland, OR, Honolulu, HI and Birmingham, AL. The portfolio includes the following network affiliates: five CBS, two ABC, four FOX, two NBC, two CW and two My Network stations.
New Vision chose the Quantel server solution after an 18-month evaluation process of all available systems on the market. Quantel's Regional Sales Manager, David Black, said: "We worked very hard to meet all of New Vision's requirements, which varied significantly from market to market. I think we have dramatically improved their production workflow and will significantly increase the speed they get news to air."
Creating winning news operations was New Vision Television's ultimate objective and significant reason for purchasing the Newsbox HD systems. Lynn Rowe, New Vision Technology Consultant, said: "We were looking at how to address not only our short term needs for a reliable, cost effective and scalable news workflow/edit system, but our long term requirements for "home grown" modification and extension of the product to develop automated, multi-tier automation and distribution as well as a tightly integrated archival solutions."
Rowe cites some of the important benefits the Newsbox HD has to offer:
  • Known reliability, scalability and quality of technology and products
  • A system capable of simultaneous FTP and direct connect edit operations
  • Exposing the API for our own development via the Quantel Power Portal
  • Ability to work with a wide range of third party editors
  • Deployment of Direct to Edit functionality for P2 and XDCAM file formats via Essence Drivers
  • Deployment of CFIS for tighter integration of Final Cut operations
  • Integration of HD graphics templates
Rowe said: "Quantel essentially invented online editing with the Harry. What also tells me a lot is that pretty much all of the high level, high quality sports operations like ESPN and others around the world stake their businesses on Quantel solutions."
Depending on the market, the Newsbox HD systems will be accompanied by a number of connected desktop editing applications including sQ View, sQ Edit as well as sQ Record and sQ Play ingest and playout applications.
The stations also plan to actively review Marco as a potential means of extending the Quantel direct connect editing interface to a laptop for mobile editing by journalists or other event coverage projects in the field.
