Demotix Launches And Provides The World's Media With News From The Street
A website that acts as a 'megaphone' by allowing people to share their news videos and images with the rest of the world, has officially launched.
Demotix (www.demotix.com) lets the media buy and publish these images, filling any foreign news gap with 'street' journalism.
Backed by the United Nations and a host of free-speech organisations, Demotix has already sold images smuggled out of North Korea by a citizen journalist to the Daily Telegraph and gets an ever-growing number of news images from the front-line every day.
Demotix has had excellent coverage of the Olympics in China, of the Georgian war and of recent South Asian troubles in Pakistan and Kashmir, but the site also has images covering art, sport, travel, economics and a fantastic 'odd' category.
Demotix is website that believes in freedom of speech and is equally for the professional photographer, the citizen journalist and the picture editor. Demotix allows people all over the world to upload their images and videos for the world's news to report on, without fear of being attacked by their country's government.
Turi Munthe, CEO of Demotix, said: "There is a distinct lack of foreign correspondents today. Only four US newspapers maintain a foreign desk. Reuters and the Associated Press provide most of the world's news to the press, but they don't have foreign correspondents in 40% of the world's countries. Demotix lets the street journalist fill in the gaps and provide the real news from the street, that otherwise would go unreported."
Due to the way the news industry operates, Demotix brokers content both on an exclusive and non-exclusive basis and is cheaper than other main players in the market.
In addition to this, the company gives 70% of the fees it charges newspapers and programmes to the photographer or filmmaker.
Members can take down their videos and images whenever they want; Demotix does not retain any claim on photographs and videos once they are removed from the website and copyright is always held by the photographer or filmmaker.
Further information is available at: www.demotix.com.
