Rushes Create Promo For Discovery's 'Chop Shop: London Garage'

Director Rich Thrift created a 30 second promo for Discovery Channel to promote their hottest new show ‘Chop Shop: London Garage’.
Chop Shop: London Garage is a 13 episode, 1 hour series, set to premiere on the Discovery Channel at 10pm on Monday October 8.
The series follows the creative talents and tantrums of Bernie and Leepu as they work from their garage in London’s East End to reconstruct old ‘bangers’ into ‘supercars’.
Thrift, working with the Discovery UK creative team, shot the two cars on a repeatable turntable. The Rushes animation department followed the overall creative direction of “sparks will fly”. The Flame team at Rushes led by Matt Jackson together with Leo Weston and Rufus Blackwell worked with the animation team to create the dynamic transformation of the car. The effects, animation and post-production were turned around in 5 working days. Rushes Colourist Marcus Timpson graded the live action.
Leo Weston commented: “We took on the task of making an old rusty car seamlessly change in to an overhauled, supped-up shiny remodelled version. Sparks were created in our 3D department that traced out the lines of the new car. We took these as our guide, and used a combination of morphs and rotoscoping to create the staggered transition between old and new. The two plates were not shot on motion control so first needed matching up – plus the new car had a much wider wheel base so this needed some fiddling in places. The 3D sparks were then composited over the top and lighting effects added to give the look of the car being invisibly welded together.
"Working with Richard was a real pleasure. He knew the look he wanted to create and left us to add our own interpretations and ideas. I look forward to our next collaboration.”
