Prominent Irish directors in production on BSÉ/IFB Short Shorts

Kieron J Walsh, Peter Sheridan and Stephen Burke are just some of the prominent directors currently in various stages of production on this year’s Bord Scannán na hÉireann/Irish Film Board (BSÉ/IFB) Short Shorts.
The BSÉ/IFB Short Shorts film scheme, now in its fourth year, has produced a host of multi-award winning shorts, which includes the Academy Award nominated ‘Fifty Percent Grey’. The scheme enables the production of three-minute short films, which play before mainstream theatrical releases and showcase the talents of the Irish film industry to wider audiences.
This year’s much-anticipated shorts range from animated and dramatic comedy pieces to imaginative experimental film.
Kieron J Walsh, who directed the hit movie ‘When Brendan Met Trudy’, has written and directed the imaginative ‘Man Of Fire’, piece starring Luke Hayden; while ‘Borstal Boy’ director Peter Sheridan has written and directed the hilarious ‘Oxygen’.
Apres Match comedian Gary Cooke, Tomás O'Suilleabháin from ‘Intermission’ and Eamon Hunt will feature in ‘Boris’, a hilarious comic short about Boris Yelson’s visit to Ireland. Boris is written and directed by award-winning director Stephen Burke, who directed the RTE television series ‘No Tears’ about the Irish hepatitis C scandal, and was shot on location in Baldonnel airport in Dublin.
Director/producer team Sydney Padua and Barry O'Donoghue, who previously worked together at Warners Bros, have produced ‘Agriculture Report’, an engaging animated comedy about the effect that the media has on its listeners.
Other animated shorts include Declan DeBarra’s ‘Nun’s Fight Club’, a mockumentary about nuns who set up their own version of fight club in their basement, produced by animation company Cartoon Saloon. Cartoon Saloon are also producing ‘Couch Potato’, directed by Tomm Moore.
Hugh McGrory is directing ‘Within Without’, shot with experimental scientific cameras making the invisible visible. Other dramatic shorts include Damon Silvester’s comedy ‘Aroma’, produced by ‘Song For A Raggy Boy’ co-producer John McDonnell; Adrienne Michel-Long’s ‘Luka’, shot by ‘Timbuktu’ and ‘Big Bow Wow’ director of photography, PJ Dillion; and historical tale ‘Shaving The Baby’, directed by Frances Roe.
All of this year’s Short Shorts will premiere at the Galway International Film Festival in July 2004.
