Frithiof purchases two iQs with QColor in-context grading

Stockholm based digital film facility Frithiof has purchased two iQ digital intermediate systems from Quantel.
Both incorporate the QColor in-context grading package. Frithiof is Sweden’s longest established digital film company, and has also been serving practically all the country’s post houses’ film transfer needs for many years.
“Our distinguishing characteristic is that we are masters of our craft,” says Frithiof colourist, Chris Noellert of the major investment in Quantel technology. “We simply won’t offer a service unless we know it is ‘best of show’.” The purchase of the iQs marks the beginning of the company’s move into new areas that will include offline, online, data-scanning and film recording as well as digital intermediate for both 35mm and 16mm.
“We’re streamlining the process financially so that clients can take full advantage of the fact that we’re a full-service post house as well as a full-service laboratory,” says Noellert. “With QColor grading on both systems, our capacity is immense and allows not only for more than one project to be on the go simultaneously, but also for concurrent operation on the same show, which can be extremely important with short deadline jobs.”
Frithiof evaluated every DI system on the market before deciding on iQ. “The fact that with iQ we weren’t looking at a grading-only machine quickly became a key attribute,” continues Noellert. “The iQ is immensely powerful; it’s not just a tool to meet one need, it’s a complete toolbox that stands on its own and also gives new value to our existing hardware grading systems. When the iQs are finished grading, they can be conforming, converting, uprezing and retouching – no other system gives us that kind of flexibility.”
