MPC’s digital grade and vfx for horror feature LD50

MPC have completed digital grade and vfx on Random Harvest/Fourhorsemen Films feature 'LD50.'
LD50 marks Simon De Selva’s directorial debut. The film stars Katharine Towne, ('Sweet Home Alabama', 'What Lies Beneath'), Tom Hardy ('Star Trek Nemesis', 'Black Hawk Down') and former Spice Girl, Melanie Brown.
This is the first feature to be graded in MPC’s new digital film lab, using Quantel’s iQ.
Colourist Max Horton was given the brief to create a dark, menacing, de-saturated look in keeping with the feel of the film. The film was shot on the new Kodak Vision 2, low grain stock, which meant that there was very little key lighting used. The flexibility of the iQ enabled Horton to import the offline and run it as a split screen in realtime, next to the 2k data scans – thus ensuring that the film being conformed was the same as the offline cut. Using monitor set-ups and look up tables also enabled Horton to emulate exactly what the finished print would look like on screen. Key colour-effect sequences include a flashback sequence, highlight blurs, grading vignettes and negative colour effects (when the creature attacks).
MPC also completed 70 effects’ shots that were seamlessly inserted during the grading process.
