High-Voltage 'Short' For Vancouver

An acclaimed short film is set to be screened at Vancouver International Film Festival.
Daniel Levi (repped by Independent Films), will be screening his high-voltage short film, Henry, at the renowned film festival between September 29 -October 14.
Working with friend, Lyall Coburn, Levi crafted the electrifying script that became Henry. A touching, yet highly original, take on the rite of passage from awkward youth to accepting adult, the film was inspired by a childhood friend of Levi who believed he could control electricity.
Produced and filmed in South Africa by Velocity Films, the four and a half minute film crackles with gentle humour, depicting the coming of age of Henry, who affects electricity, causing all sorts of chaos as lights and appliances go haywire, as does the poor boy's self-confidence. As time goes on, however, he comes to terms with and harnesses his 'gift'.
The film features local South African acting talent and some very clever in-camera trickery. Despite featuring no dialogue, the film tells a powerful story – rendered all the more powerful thanks to a stirring soundtrack composed by musician Simon Ringrose.
"In terms of the shoot itself, the biggest challenge proved to be coordinating the electric lights" explained Levi.
"It was all done in camera, although the timing of the very last shot was tweaked around in post. We rigged our own lights and used what is, in effect, a mixing board so that we could time the lights perfectly with the actor's performance"
"Working on Henry has been fantastic from start to finish - it's a story I had always wanted to tell and I was lucky to have funding that gave me total artistic and creative freedom. It's great that the film is now going to reach an even bigger audience at the Vancouver International Film Festival” added Levi
