Harris Corporation Provides Omantel With Selenio Media Convergence Platform

Harris Corporation, an international communications and information technology company, is providing a large-scale contribution and distribution system based on its newly-launched Selenio media convergence platform to Omantel, the service provider for the Ministry of Information (MOI) in the Sultanate of Oman. Harris is working with Mustafa Sultan Security & Communication Systems Co on the project.
The new Harris Selenio integrated media convergence platform - an industry first - will support a highly redundant 1080p-capable digital television contribution network at over 55 sites in Oman's main cities.
Ahmed Al Kindy, Senior Manager, Infrastructure Projects for Omantel, said: "The Harris Selenio media platform is built on technology that cannot be found anywhere else in the industry. Our goal is to provide the best possible picture quality to the people of Oman and Selenio, with its 1080p capability, will allow us to do just that."
The Selenio media convergence platform enables service provider to support content from multiple sources and deliver it over multiple paths. While the media convergence platform fits into existing infrastructure, it also provides customers with an on-ramp to the IP networks as business evolves - future proofing the infrastructure. Selenio's modular solution combines traditional baseband video and audio processing, compression and IP networking features within a single, 3RU platform.
In this project, Selenio H264 1080p HD encoders and decoders, 6800+ core processing modules and NetVX ATM interfaces will be combined to handle multiple redundancy schemes (1+1 and n+1) with SD/HD 1080p digital transmission head-end equipment. The resulting infrastructure provides a unique combination of density and power efficiency, while significantly reducing cost, weight and cabling requirements for the customer.
Said Bacho, VP of Sales and Services for Harris Broadcast Communications in the Middle East, said: "The ease with which the redundancy schemes can be implemented in the Selenio solution is unparalleled. Harris was selected because of its highly-regarded expertise in the area of reliable modular architecture, as well as its ability to lead the market with innovations such as Selenio."
The project is being implemented by M/S Mustafa Sultan Security & Communications Co, a leading Systems Integrators in Oman with extensive experience installing major technologically advanced projects in the country.
In broadcast communications, Harris offers products, systems and services that provide interoperable workflow solutions for broadcast, cable, satellite and out-of-home networks. The Harris ONE solution brings together highly integrated and cost-effective products that enable advanced media workflows for emerging content delivery business models.
