Iraq video abuse row soldier released |
|
A soldier who was arrested in connection with a video which shows British troops apparently abusing Iraqi civilians has been interviewed and released.
Three other soldiers have already been arrested over the video, which caused a row when the 'News of the World' recently published footage from it. The video, which was shot in the southern Iraq town of Al Amarah in 2004, shows a group of up to ten soldiers apparently attacking a group of young Iraqis following a riot near their base. An inquiry was launched last month after footage, showing what appeared to be Iraqi teenagers being punched, kicked and headbutted by British soldiers, was published in the 'News of the World'. The soldiers involved are believed to be from the 1st Battalion, Light Infantry. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence said that the investigation was continuing. He said: "The Royal Military Police need time to conduct a thorough investigation to identify all those involved and failings that might have occurred." The spokesperson also said that although British soldiers were expected to uphold the highest standards of behaviour, they also deserved the same rights as British citizens. He added: "This means they remain innocent until proven guilty and they do not lose that right because they serve in uniform." (KMcA/GB)
