Royals to have key roles in Trafalgar celebrations |
|
The Queen and other leading members of the Royal Family will participate in the UK’s Trafalgar bicentenary celebrations at the end of this month.
Details of the main ‘Trafalgar 200’ celebrations, which will take place on October 21 and 23, were announced on Tuesday. The celebrations will begin on ‘Trafalgar Day’ - October 21 - with a traditional memorial service on board the HMS Victory at Portsmouth at 8:45am, followed by the laying of wreaths at Nelson’s tomb at St Paul’s Cathedral at 11am. The Queen, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, will light the National ‘Trafalgar Weekend’ Beacon and witness a special Beat Retreat by the band of HM Royal Marines and the firing of a 52 gun night-time broadside from HMS Victory, before attending a reception and Trafalgar night dinner on board the vessel. On October 23, The Duke of York will attend the ‘Trafalgar Parade’ in Trafalgar Square at 11am and will lead the laying of wreaths at Nelson’s Column. He will also join the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, the Princess Royal and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent at the ‘Trafalgar Service’ at St Paul’s Cathedral at 3pm. The Princess Royal will also attend a reception, hosted by London Mayor Ken Livingstone, at the Guildhall afterwards. The celebrations will culminate with ‘The Spirit of Nelson’ show in Trafalgar Square, which will begin at 6:30pm. Ten thousand people are expected to witness the final display, which will also be attended by the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Michael of Kent. It is estimated that around 6,000 events are taking place across the UK to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar and the death of Lord Nelson. More than 1,000 beacons will be lit around the country to mark Trafalgar Day on October 21. (KMcA/SP) |
