Millionaire Rabbi Cleared Of Dealing Cocaine |
|
A multi-millionaire rabbi has been cleared of dealing drugs by a court.
Manchester Crown Court heard how Rabbi Baruch Chalomish, 54, from Salford, spent £1,000 a week on cocaine to go to parties while paying prostitutes for sex. Chalomish, worth £7 million through his property dealings, admitted possessing cocaine and was found guilty of a further count of possession but cleared of two counts of possession with intent to supply. The rabbi had been accused of financing a drug-dealing business with his friend and co-accused Nasir Abbas. Chalomish is due to be sentenced on 17 December. Abbas, 54, failed to turn up for the trial and is now on the run. He was convicted of one count of possession and one count of supply and jailed in his absence for six years. Following the trial Chalomish's defence barrister, Jonathan Goldberg QC, said: "My client is too emotional to speak but he is grateful to the jury for their verdicts vindicating that he was only a cocaine user and never a supplier. "He now hopes the shame and degradation he has suffered will serve as an example to others to shun drugs." (GK/BMcC) |
