Modern VideoFilm Goes Stereoscopic With Da Vinci's Resolve R-3D

A leading provider of post-production services to the film and television industries, da Vinci Systems have announced that Modern VideoFilm has upgraded to the Resolve R-3D stereoscopic digital enhancement suite.
With two da Vinci R-3D systems, Modern VideoFilm now has the capability to colour grade nonlinear 3D files in real time, a significant advantage for entering the rapidly expanding 3D entertainment market.
Mark Smirnoff, President of Modern VideoFilm, said: "Our upgrade to the Resolve R-3D system has allowed us to take a significant leap forward in the level of service we can provide. We've benefited greatly from the speed and ease of use that R-3D offers us. Some of the new features in particular - such as the C.O.R.E. processing, the 3D look-up tables and the ability to playout video live for video deliverables - have proven to be big time savers for our staff. The ability to colour grade in real time in 3D with simultaneous left/eye/right eye has been a significant benefit to both our colourists and customers."
Modern VideoFilm has used the R-3D systems to complete work on two major feature films and is currently finishing a 3D film opening in theatres on May 1. The company plans to complete other projects on the R-3D this year, as well.
One of the facility's R-3D systems sits at the heart of Modern VideoFilm's recently completed 3D digital intermediate (DI) theatre and the other systems is dedicated for use in a separate theatre.
The post house uses the systems in its 4K, 2K, 2D and 3D DI workflows to access conformed data files that are stored on the facility's SAN. The R-3D systems also are used downstream of the DI to create HD versions and other deliverables of the company's film and television projects.
da Vinci's R-3D suite offers flexible, real-time throughput of nonlinear images for film, television and commercials. The R-3D system provides superior efficiency, consistency, and ease of use in stereoscopic grading by allowing the operator to grade both stereoscopic streams simultaneously in real time to a 2K projector by simply wearing stereoscopic glasses. Before the introduction of R-3D, colourists colour graded with one eye and then the other.
R-3D supports 4K, 2K, HD and SD colour grading for maximum flexibility, and it features da Vinci's unique Impressario control surfacec. The Resolve R-series is driven by da Vinci's advanced processing engine, C.O.R.E. (Cuda Optimised Resolve Engine). With C.O.R.E., da Vinci has leveraged the power and efficiency of GPUs not only for graphics display, but also for the additional processing power that eliminates the complex, computation-intensive challenges inherent in colour finishing .
