Goldcrest Post Adds Second Pablo And Genetic Engineering

One of the busiest boutique facilities in New York City, Goldcrest Post, recently took delivery of its second Pablo 2K digital intermediate and colour grading system.
The company also added Genetic Engineering, Quantel's teamworking infrastructure that allows workstations to share storage, so giving a massive boost to workflow.
In 2004, Goldcrest Post New York opened its brand new 2K/HD Digital Intermediate theatre. In 2006, the Pablo became the heart of this theatre, unique to the East Coast, providing clients with 2K Data or HD Online editorial and colour correction services to a 2K large screen digital cinema projection.
The first Pablo was installed to tackle the Ken Burns WWII epic documentary, 'The War'. Today, the newest Pablo is at again, but this time it is being used concurrently on Burns' six-part S-16mm documentary, 'National Parks' and James Ivory's new 35mm feature, 'The City Of Your Final Destination'.
John Dowdell, Director of Imaging Technologies, said: "In less than two months of receiving our second Pablo with Genetic Engineering, our workflow has already increased exponentially. The Pablo is a brilliant colour corrector. It is very intuitive and incredibly fast. Due to its efficiencies and the Pablo allows projects to stay on budget."
Much of Goldcrest Post's work consists of mixed media as well as solely film or tape-based projects. The company typically uses one of the Pablos as a conform system while most of the Digital Intermediate effects and colour correction work takes place on the second Pablo in the DI theatre. All of the high resolution media is instantly shared via Genetic Engineering. This is the only real-time 2K shared storage infrastructure in New York, allowing instantaneous shared access to 2K media for the edit, vfx and colour correct talent.
Dowdell said: "Genetic Engineering is something we always dreamed about. I estimate the system has allowed me to be nearly twice as efficient in my day to day work."
Tim Spitzer, Managing Director, added: "Right out the box, it started offering us a lot of flexibility. We are a boutique facility, so efficiency of equipment utilisation is a huge issue in terms of profitability. The more work we can get through the facility in a timely manner, the more profitable the work is."
