BFI IMAX 'Worldwide Highest Grossing Cinema' For 'U2 3D'

The BFI IMAX has become the highest grossing cinema in the world for the U2 concert movie 'U2 3D'.
The one-screen venue, which boasts the best cinema sound system in the world, opened the film in IMAX 3D on February 22, alongside the digital 3D release. Ticket sales to date, including advances have now reached £223,235 and 19,087 have bought tickets to see the film on Britain's biggest screen.
This achievement follows the similar success that the BFI IMAX had earlier in the year with Warner Bros. Pictures 'Beowulf 3D', grossing more than any other cinema worldwide on any format.
'U2 3D', the first digital 3D, multi-camera, real-time production, which takes audiences on a quantum leap beyond traditional concert films, is distributed by Revolver Entertainment, the first company to distribute a live-action digital 3D film in the UK.
Dennis Laws, General and Technical Manager of the BFI IMAX, said: "The film was launched with a strong marketing and press campaign which got us off to a flying start and we've maintained consistently strong attendances in peak slots throughout the run.
"Customers have been enthusiastic about the 3D experience - some even saying that they prefer the comfort and ease of seeing a concert at the IMAX than going to an actual gig!"
Justin Marciano, Revolver Entertainment's Managing Director, said: "The success that the BFI IMAX has had with 'U2 3D' bodes very well for other 3D feature releases. As a distributor, Revolver is keen to work on cutting edge films and with new developments in technology, so we hope to be able to partner with the IMAX in the future."
'U2 3D' is currently screening nightly at the BFI IMAX and will remain on the programme during the spring months.
The BFI IMAX is a state-of-the-art large-format cinema that can seat up to 485 people and features a screen more than 20 metres high and stretching more than 26 metres high. Further information is available at: www.bfi.org.uk.
Revolver Entertainment is a UK independent film distribution company. Further information is available at: www.revolvergroup.com.
