NTL TO LAUNCH INTERACTIVE PREMIER LEAGUE SERVICE

NTL Director of Interactive Content, John Hondras, has revealed that the cable platform will definitely be producing an interactive Premier League football service, to enhance its pay-per-view football coverage, to be launched in August 2001.
NTL won the pay-per-view rights to the Premier League earlier this year, paying £328 million for a three-year-deal, which runs from the 2001/2002 season.
NTL’s interactive football will be a clear rival to Sky’s pioneering enhanced soccer service, Sky Sports Active, although NTL’s transmission will not overlap with Sky’s live coverage.
Matches will be shown on 37 consecutive Sundays, with NTL hoping to attract the UK’s estimated 12 million dedicated Premier League fans. Four million currently pay £30-a-month for Sky’s Premier League coverage.
The news came as Hondras outlined details of the cable company’s £25 million digital fund, £5 million of which is earmarked for the development of interactive services over the next five years.
