High Point score hit with sex traffic drama ‘Matrioshki’

Since launching ten part sex traffic drama, ‘Matrioshki’ at MIPCOM last year, the series has been snapped up by a growing number of territories eager to share in the success.
Ratings for ‘Matrioshki’ went through the roof in France when it aired on M6, pulling in a healthy 3.7 million viewers from its first episode. At the same time, the series has also achieved huge success on LAPTV for Latin America, where critics have been comparing it to ‘The Sopranos’, ‘24’ and ‘Six Feet Under’.
Recent deals has made the number of territories airing the series 73 including Viasat for Scandinavia and Hungary, Sogecable for Spain, RUV for Iceland, Tonis TV for the Ukraine, TV Polska for Poland, HRT for Croatia, as well as YLE for Finland.
The series follows ten young eastern European girls who are tricked by Belgian gangsters into signing contracts as dancers only to be forced into prostitution as soon as they arrive in Antwerp. Series is produced by Belgium's Independent Productions for VTM and Canal+ Belgium.
"We knew as soon as we saw 'Matrioshki' that we had an international hit on our hands", High Point Managing Director Carey Fitzgerald said. "The series successfully manages to balance an accessible, glossy look and gripping story-lines with a serious issue that needs to be brought to the mainstream, namely the trading and forced prostitution of young innocent women."
