Sony celebrates silver HD for high quality OB production equipment

At IBC 2005, Sony is celebrating its 118th outside broadcast (OB) vehicle order in 25 years, with the announcement that it is to develop a large High Definition (HD) production trailer for SABC, South Africa’s state broadcaster.
Due for completion in June 2006, SABC’s investment is further proof that leading broadcasters in Europe, Middle East and Africa are migrating towards HD and digital production.
“The ability to produce high quality live news, entertainment, culture and sports programming is at the forefront of our customers minds,” said Naomi Climer, Director, Professional Services and Head of Media Sales, Sony Europe. “We are seeing that mobility and flexibility in terms of the vehicle’s capacity and equipment is an essential part of their competitive offering.”
Sony has worked with many broadcasters who see the sports industry as a primary reason to invest in cutting edge technology for their OB vehicles. South Africa will be hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup and as a result, SABC decided to invest in 13 of Sony’s standard HD cameras and two HD Supermotion cameras, as it wants to capture and transmit the action in the best possible quality.
TV productioncenter Zürich (tpc), Switzerland’s largest TV production company, also chose to partner with Sony to launch HDTV in Switzerland. Its new OB vehicle, which was on display at IBC, can host from 12 to 24 Sony cameras and will be used at the 2006 Winter International Sporting Games in Italy.
After this event, tpc aims to continuously increase the number of sports and culture programmes recorded in High Definition format.
