BBC Broadcast appoints Head of Languaging Services

BBC Broadcast has created a new position in the company to facilitate growth into the translation broadcast market and will now offer language versioning services including subtitles, voice-overs and dubbing.
Thomas Blomberg - previously the Managing Director of the UK arm of global subtitling group, SDI Media - has been appointed as Head of Languaging Services at BBC Broadcast.
BBC Broadcast already provides a range of services to help broadcasters reach the widest possible audience in the UK, including subtitling and signing for deaf and hard of hearing viewers, audio description for blind and partially sighted audiences and English language subtitles for videos and DVDs.
Clients include the BBC, Channel 4, Five, UKTV, The History Channel, National Geographic and the Central Office of Information.
"We provide a significant part of the UK broadcast industry with subtitles, sign-language and audio-description for the benefit of deaf, hard-of-hearing, blind and partially sighted people. Language versioning is a large industry and is growing rapidly around the world. BBC Broadcast already provides creative services to clients in Europe, the USA and Asia and we are looking forward to expanding internationally through the languaging market as well,“ said Ruth Griffiths, Director of Access Services at BBC Broadcast.
“In most countries about half the programmes shown on TV and films in the cinema and on DVD need to be translated into the local language. Language versioning is a crucial service for international broadcasters as well as cinema and DVD distributors. They expect the best possible versioning of their products, on time and for a competitive price,” said Thomas Blomberg, Head of Languaging Services at BBC Broadcast.
Blomberg continues, “I believe BBC Broadcast has access to the professional expertise and technology to offer a high quality and inexpensive service to clients around the world”.
Before joining BBC Broadcast Thomas worked for 19 years at SDI Media Group, initially as Head of Development in Sweden and later as Managing Director of the UK arm.
During his time at SDI Media, Thomas was instrumental in expanding the business internationally. Thomas started his career as a journalist in Sweden.
