HD-ready and Dolby E audio monitoring with integral HD video downconversion shown by TSL

TSL has shown two major audio monitoring developments at this year’s IBC – affordable Dolby E monitoring and multi-standard HD video down conversion in its audio monitoring range.
Dolby E allows up to eight audio channels to be carried in a single AES stereo pair and has begun to gain considerable market acceptance. Used to carry 5.1 surround signals or multi-language services, Dolby E facilitates the expansion of audio capacity in a typical digital facility.
TSL will show the brand new AMU2 8 Dolby unit. This unique unit allows Dolby E and Dolby Digital signals to be accurately monitored in a wide variety of system applications such as MCR, server digitisation and transmission. The unit also offers assignable phase monitoring, crucial in the surround sound environment to prove the accurate correlation of related signals at a glance. The unit is supplied with eight, 53-segment tricolour bargraphs in both PPM and VU scales and an alpha-numeric display for metadata/Dolby information. This unit also features SNMP monitoring of errors and metadata for use in more sophisticated third party alarm and error detection systems.
At IBC TSL also demonstrated HD-ready audio monitoring units for the same price as SD. The all-new HD-ready AMU range offers all the usual TSL audio monitoring facilities and allows HD video signals, at any standard resolution, to be down-converted in the unit and then displayed on an SD or composite monitor. The units will also offer HD/SD pass-through with re-clocking. One of the core advantages is that by using TSL’s technology, only one BNC need be connected at any given operator position to be able to both “see” the video and hear the audio. This facility will initially be launched with the AMU2 8 Dolby and the Tektronix™-style AMUT range, with other products to follow shortly.
“Audio design within the overall broadcast infrastructure has been a major challenge over the last year. The use of Dolby and HD can add dramatically to the cost of any new system. We recognise that it is likely to be a considerable length of time before installations are comprehensively equipped with Dolby and/or HD and these new monitoring products with innovative new features provide a cost-effective route forwards for most systems big or small,” explained Russell Grute, Head of Sales at TSL.
