St Anne’s and One complete post on BBC’s ‘Supervolcano’

St Anne’s and One have recently completed the postproduction on ‘Supervolcano’, a 2 x 1 hour factual drama detailing the possible consequences of a super-volcanic eruption at Yellow Stone National Park for BBC Science.
Directed by Tony Mitchell, series produced by Ailsa Orr and executive produced by Michael Mosley; ‘Supervolcano’ draws on scientific evidence available from a number of previous eruptions at Yellowstone and research specially commissioned for the programme.
One’s Colourist Simone Grattarola completed the grade on ‘Supervolcano’, with St. Anne’s Editor, Jamie Shemeld completing the on-line edit.
“The drama was shot on HD-CAM and HD mastered on Nitris, with source footage supplied in various formats including HDD5, DVCAM, BETACAM, Digital BETACAM and 16mm,” said St Anne’s Editor, Jamie Shemeld. “This footage was either treated so it sat seamlessly with the HD-CAM drama, or was degraded to give a broken up look.”
“We chose to use Nitris on the project, as it was an effects intensive edit and the non linear system gave Tony Mitchell, the Director, a greater creative freedom.”
“‘Supervolcano’ was graded in our new DI suite from HD,” said One’s Colourist Simone Grattarola. “I enjoyed the experience of working with HD as it provided me with a different challenge to that presented by 35mm, where I could implement new working methods and disciplines. This adaptation of techniques coupled with Tony’s clarity of vision gave the finished film a strikingly diverse style.”
The project, commissioned by BBC Science, is due for transmission on BBC One on March 13 & 14 2005.
