QUANTEL UNVEIL MAJOR ADVANCES AT NAB

QUANTEL have unveiled major advances in both their newsroom and workstation product lines at this year’s NAB.
There are demonstrations of a live newsroom environment based on Quantel’s Clipbox Studio servers, and being shown for the first time at NAB, Clipbox Studio offers a complete, self-contained production platform that includes a host of features for studio production. Introduced at IBC last year, Clipbox Studio with version 3 has more control options, a new disc controller supporting eight simultaneous video channels with a choice of compression schemes such as DVCPRO 25 and 50 and 50 Mbit I-frame MPEG, plus it supports Quantel's Clipnet, gigabit network.
Quantel are also expected to announce new capabilities for version 4 of Clipbox Studio that will open up new markets. This includes support for the MOS protocol from AP, which allows playlist import. Together with support for Quantel and third party editors and automation systems, this allows Clipbox Studio to provide a solution to meet the needs for low cost regional newsrooms. Version 4 will also include support for slow motion playback direct from the server ideal for sports applications.
In addition to regional newsroom applications, Quantel Clipbox Power has gained considerable success in larger integrated newsroom environments. Clipbox Power embedded editing facility allows multiple editors to directly edit all material held within the server simultaneously and without copying, and with results instantly ready for air. It will also instantly conform and play a browse-edited clip for immediate transmission or further refinement at an Editbox workstation.
With several recent orders announced for Clipbox Power-based newsrooms the largest installation remains ITN in London, which supports over 250 journalist workstations making it the largest fully digital newsroom in the world.
Quantel are also displaying their workstation products, highlighting new capabilities for its iQ range and additions to its Editbox feature set. Quantel claim iQ is the first workstation to support resolution co-existence with the ability to work simultaneously on material of different resolutions within the same job.
At NAB, Quantel will also announce support for 2K resolution and colour correction, moving iQ into film in addition to HD and standard definition -all on the same system. Other capabilities in film and HD editing and composition are expected to be announced by Quantel and other third parties.
Quantel's Editbox and Henry Infinity ranges continue to develop and NAB will see demonstrations of Editbox working alongside iQ in a distributed environment, together with the latest tools in version 8 of the Editbox system.
