S4C TO BROADCAST LIONS’ TOUR
S4C WILL have extensive coverage of the Lions’ tour of Australia - providing a package of ‘as live’ matches and highlights programmes in peak-viewing hours for viewers in Wales and the UK.
The last-minute deal with BSkyB means that S4C are the only terrestrial channel in the UK to have any coverage of the 2001 Lions’ tour.
The Welsh-language channel will show the top tour fixtures every weekend ‘as live’, and a highlights package for the mid-week matches. The ‘as live” coverage will include transmissions of all three test matches.
The matches will be shown live on the Sky Sport satellite service, but will be transmitted in the mornings British Summer Time.
For many in Wales, the S4C broadcasts may be the first opportunity to watch the tour’s ten matches. All the programmes will be transmitted in the Welsh language. The coverage will be provided by the BBC Cymru Wales sports department and fronted by experienced commentator Huw Llewelyn Davies and rugby columnist and analyst, Gwyn Jones. (CD)
