The Pixel Farm releases PFZed optical flow range expansion

The Pixel Farm, a company focused on innovation in the field of high-end digital postproduction, has announced the release of PFZed, the latest in its innovative range of optical flow products.
For the first time it is possible to extract 3D information from an image sequence on a per pixel basis. Generating Z depth is currently a process that uses hand painting techniques and artistic judgement or alternatively, complex camera rigs and meticulous pre-planning. The Pixel Farm once again leads the way with cost effective tools designed to automate complex processes thus freeing up creative talent.
Using data generated by the new optical flow tools added to the latest release of PFTrack, PFZed automatically extracts pixel depth values from footage shot with camera motion. Each pixel’s individual Z depth value is calculated and quantizing tools can be used to optimise an output - via standard Z depth formats, for speed or quality. Z depth information is used extensively in the post production workflow for tasks such as automatically generating layers, mattes, controlling 3D particle systems and optical effects such as Z blur and depth mattes.
“Using PFTrack is increasingly seen as a core technology in the production workflow and not just as a tracking solution,” Michael Lancaster, Product Director of The Pixel Farm explained. “PFZed moves us one step further to our ultimate goal of a total data model of the image sequence. As we roll out more products, the customers who use our technology will have more and more time for doing what they are really good at - being creative.”
A PFZed-Kit will also be available to extend the use of the data generated by PFTrack allowing customers to further extend the plug-in functionality. Initial release will be for Eyeon’s Digital Fusion and Apple’s Shake.
Shipping from November 3, 2004, PF Zed will be available for £200 ($330; €300).
