Leading Norwegian commercial broadcaster chooses Quantel for major news upgrade

TV2, Norway’s largest commercial broadcaster, has ordered a major Quantel sQ news and sports production system for its flagship Digital Newsroom Project (DNR).
The DNR comprises two equal subsystems for TV2’s two main production centres in Bergen and Oslo. Phase One will begin immediately at TV2’s Bergen headquarters, ready to go on air in the first quarter of 2005. TV2’s Oslo News Centre will be completed in June 2005.
Systems integration at both sites will be carried out by Quantel’s Norwegian agent, 2MTV, who were actively involved in the system design and project consultation.
Quantel won the TV2 contract in the face of stiff competition. Key differentiators in Quantel’s favour included its progressive journalist and craft editing interface, the inherent openness of the system and consequent ease of integration with TV2’s chosen Ardendo asset management, archiving and playout automation; and Split Remote – Quantel’s unique remote/home twinned server technology.
The Bergen system is centred on four sQ servers providing 350 hours of 50 Mbit storage and 12 dynamically switchable I/O ports. There are 34 QCut PC browse/editing applications for the journalists, 6 QEdit seats for TV2’s ‘video journalists’ and 2 QEdit Pro craft editors. The Oslo system is very similar, but based around three sQ servers. Split Remote will enable journalists in Bergen to look at and edit material held on the Oslo server, and vice versa, providing optimum usage of resources and fastest time to air wherever the story originates.
TV2 Technical Director, John Inge Brattetveit, gave several reasons for choosing Quantel sQ systems. He said: “Firstly, Quantel’s ability to integrate equal size news and sports production centres in Bergen and Oslo to appear as if they were a ‘one-site system’ was a major benefit to us. Our journalists also highly appreciate Quantel’s user interface and fast production access to incoming feeds, as well as the seamless use of high and low resolution media. The combined system offers a high level of redundancy and the ability to work with a range of third party automation and media asset management providers such as Ardendo, Screen Subtitling Systems, iNews and vizRT. And finally, Quantel has been able to do all this at a competitive price.”
