BBC Technology hosts UK's official statistics online
BBC Technology, provider of products and services to global media-driven organisations, has announced that its Internet Solutions business is hosting the Office for National Statistics' (ONS) online portal.
These statistics are some of the UK's most critical and widely used data sources, and their online delivery requires the highest levels of security, availability and accessibility.
ONS's web site, National Statistics Online, provides a wide range of commercial and publicly available data including economic metrics, such as the Retail Price Index, population statistics like the 2001 Census, and data on society, the environment and the labour market. It publishes secure, time-sensitive data that the UK government uses to make key planning decisions, as well as providing a range of subscription services to UK businesses in diverse industry sectors, including manufacturing, banking and financial services. The site also delivers a wide range of data and other information free to the public.
BBC Technology's Internet Solutions provided the systems design, integration and optimisation for hosting the National Statistics Online services, and currently manages 30 servers for the service at its Maidenhead data centre, including those that power ONS's transactional commercial network, public web site and internal sites.
