FOR the first time, interviews with Tolkien are to be combined with film footage developed from the Hildebrandt brothers’ illustrations, plus comment and analysis by leading academics and those close to Tolkien, to produce an authoritative, yet entertaining look at the factors elevating The Master of The Rings to the status of a great work.
The Lord of The Rings is a literary landmark - one of the most popular works of literature in the world, with millions of copies sold in thousands of languages. The author however was a modest Professor of Old English who drew on the Norse sagas for inspiration, and lived in a quiet Oxford street. In spite of the prevalence of fantasy novels, The Lord of The Rings stands alone as a literary milestone, with music composed and games created in its honour in addition to a plethora of academic discussions on linguistics, history and it’s influence on the arts.
In addition to stunning recreations of the novel, Cromwell have licensed interviews with Tolkien himself plus interviews with his children, publisher, and leading academics. It addresses questions such as “What is he literary worth of the book?” “How well developed is the plot?” “How well drawn are the characters?” “Is the world of Tolkien a convincing one?” and “What are the literary parallels?”
