Producing Live UHD/4K Aerial Footage On Budget

News Image
Just a few years ago, the only option of producing professional, dynamic live aerial footage was renting a turbine driven helicopter equipped with a heavy and expensive gimbal system.

Then small drones started gaining a small segment for specific aerial filming scenarios, but are limited in flight-time, range, weather conditions and camera/lens options.

In 2015 Dynamic Perspective introduced its super lightweight, professional 5-axis stabilized camera platform. The DynaX5, mounted to a Gyro-Copter, is now widely used for live sports productions, such as Marathons, Bicycle-Races, Rallys, etc., and has the potential to take a large segment of professional aerial filming productions.

The DPCopter, Dynamic Perspective's heavy-duty single-rotor, turbine driven UAV with an endurance of up to one hour, was equipped with a prototype DynaX5 in 2014 and was the first commercially certified UAV in Austria to be used in live sports events, such as Airshows, Races, Skiing-Events, etc.

The DynaX5 has been constructed from ground up to be operated on smaller aircraft, like Gyro-Copters and small Helicopters, while providing the stability and payload of most larger gimbal systems. This maximizes the budget by reducing the high flight-time rates to a fraction of the costs associated with big helicopters carrying heavy gimbal-equipment.

"Imagine being able to produce 5 hours of aerial footage at the budget of one!" says Keith Harding, which owns a DynaX5 and a commercially certified Auto-Gyro Cavalon-Pro in the UK. He can equip his system with various cameras and lens-combinations up to 8K. Amongst others, he also utilizes the DynaX5 on his 4x4 buggy, or his Porsche Cayenne rig.
Now Dynamic Perspective has revolutionized the market again and adopted the DynaX5 to be one of the first Gimbal systems to deliver live 4K footage. Getting UHD/4K video out of the camera, through a gimbal’s slipring, and into the production workflow, is not a trivial task, as with this new technology multiple different standards have emerged: 12G-SDI, 6G-SDI, (Multi-)Fiber-Link, 2x3G-SDI.

"Imagine being able to produce 5 hours of aerial footage at the budget of one!" – Keith Harding, Beyond-HD, London, UK.

"The compact size of the gimbal and power-box, and the low power consumption allows the use of very small tracking cars" – Wim Robberechts, Robberechts TV, Belgium.

"If you are looking for a lower cost alternative to the high end aerial filming cinema platforms then look no further than the Dyna X5. Its value for money, flexibility and performance are excellent" – John Marzano BSC Assoc., GBCT, Aerial Director of Photography, Marzano Films Limited, London, UK.

"The light weight of the DynaX5 is critical both for flight performance and manoeuvrability. The forward center of gravity offset created by the gimbal feels minimal in flight and the weight of the gimbal, even when using a large lens, was scarcely noticeable" – York Galland, iflyheli, Robinson R66 Helicopter Owner and Pilot, California, USA.

"The DynaX5 delivers state of the art UHD video on our Vortex crane, even under rough weather conditions" – Matthew Gladstone, Cammotion, UK.
