Bristol Film Office Launches Sherlock: Bristol Locations Trail

News Image
Bristol Film Office has launched a new Sherlock: Bristol Locations Trail allowing visitors and residents to celebrate Bristol's connections with the hit BBC drama and follow in the footsteps of Sherlock and Watson.

Expanding on the already popular digital Movie Maps, the print friendly annotated Sherlock: Bristol Locations Trail locates the filming destinations that have been used in Bristol across the series including those that appear in the 2016 special, The Abominable Bride.

Users can reach 10 plotted locations within a 3km radius of Bristol City Centre mostly on foot with two locations that can be reached via the Bristol Cycle Way.

The latest instalment of the Hartswood Films series, Sherlock - The Abominable Bride transmitted on New Year's Day 2016 and was the UK's most watched programme across all channels for the 2015 festive period. It was simulcast across 750 cinemas nationwide and despite its limited release, took £21 million at the box office, worldwide.

Natalie Moore of Bristol Film Office says: "Following on from the success of our digital Movie Maps and Bristol's growing reputation as a popular filming location, we're delighted to launch our first printable Locations Trail. Bristol has played host to the popular Sherlock series starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman since it began in 2010, and this walking trail will allow fans to explore the locations that have featured on screen including The Victoria Rooms, Bristol South Swimming Pool. Arnos Vale Cemetery and Portland Square, and embrace our filming heritage. We hope the trail will not only provide a fun & healthy way for people to follow in the footsteps of Sherlock and Watson, and discover the city, but also boost screen tourism and the local economy."

Kathryn Davis, Head of Tourism, Destination Bristol also said: "Bristol Film Office and The Bottle Yard Studios do a fantastic job in attracting a very high calibre of filming to the city with the resulting productions seen across the world. This gives us a real opportunity to bring additional visitors to the city inspired by locations seen on the big and small screen. Screen tourism was worth an estimated £100 million-£140 million to the national economy in 2014 and with productions such as Sherlock having such international appeal, we look forward to the boost to Bristol's visitor economy. We saw a huge spike in social media traffic around the airing of The Abominable Bride, following a carefully planned campaign with partners overseas. We now look forward to welcoming these Sherlock fans to Bristol to discover the trail for themselves."

Sherlock Bristol Locations Trail Plotted Sites:
Ashton Court - The Abominable Bride
The Victoria Rooms - The Sign of Three
