Citizen Khan Returns For Series Five

News Image
Citizen Khan, a family-based sitcom, has been commissioned for a fifth series, BBC One has confirmed.

The new series will see Adil Ray return to the title role alongside Shobu Kapoor, who plays Mrs Khan; Krupa Pattani and Bhavna Limbachia, who play daughters Shazia and Alia; and Abdullah Afzal, who plays Shazia's husband, Amjad.

Amjad is now a proper policeman in the new episodes as he and Shazia prepare to become parents for the second time, while Alia is thinking of leaving the family home – by going to college, or by achieving her dream of Instagram superstardom. Mrs Khan, meanwhile, is facing the prospect of an empty house and wonders if she and her husband will have anything in common. However, Mr Khan is unaware of any trouble as he continues to be an entrepreneur, community leader and (surely soon), the next president of the Sparkhill Pakistani Business Association.

Set in Birmingham's Sparkhill area, Citizen Khan is a family-based sitcom about the British-Asian Khan family and their everyday life – including the ups and downs. The series is produced by BBC In-house Comedy and shot on location in Birmingham and in front of a studio audience at MediaCityUK, Salford.

Citizen Khan is commissioned by Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One, and Shane Allen, Controller of Comedy Commissioning. The Executive Producer is Rebecca Papworth. The series was created by Adil Ray, and is written by Anil Gupta and Richard Pinto, alongside Mr Ray.

Adil Ray said: "I'm so grateful to the British television public who really have taken The Khan's to their hearts. You don't get to a fifth series without their love and support and of course the brilliant cast, co-writers and production team. My mum's so pleased she's bringing out the Royal Albert dinner set this weekend."

Shane Allen added: "The irrepressible Mr Khan and his family return with their refreshing comic slice of British Asian family life. It's a testament to Adil's wonderful creation and the writing team that there's lots more comedy chaos and adventures ahead. It's grown to become a firm BBC One audience favourite in a mainstream family-friendly slot."
