Channel 4 Commissions First TV Series For i-D

Channel 4 has confirmed it has commissioned the first television series for i-D.

'Street Sound and Style' is a four-part documentary series that traces the journey of how music and street style subcultures have changed the face of pop culture, utilising i-D's position at the forefront of British style culture to bring authenticity and authority to this retrospective.

Directed by Ewen Spencer and written by Clive Martin, the show will provide a cutting-edge insight into the world of British style in a deal for Channel 4 and i-D, with a dedicated dual-release plan between the publisher and broadcaster. The show will transmit in the summer, before an online release on i-D.co in shorter form episodes. This marks a new era of collaboration and flexibility between broadcast and online publishers.

Each episode focuses on several different subcultures within one era and how these different style and music 'tribes' interacted with each other; from the Mod Revivalists and Skinheads of the early 80s, to the Blitz Kids, Casuals and Second Summer of Love. 'Street Sound and Style' also traces the UK's obsession with music and fashion through the grunge and jungle styles of the 90s right through to the nu-metal and urban sounds of the mid-noughties.

This deal is the latest chapter in i-D's 35-year history, following the re-launch of the brand's online identity in 2013, with a video-driven fashion and culture platform. VICE Media acquired i-D in 2012 and this show is the latest in the global youth media company's expansion into original TV programming. Over the past 12 months, VICE has produced shows for some of Europe's biggest carriers across Germany, Spain, France, Denmark and Greece.

i-D's Global Group Director of Film & Video and Executive Producer on the project, Ravi Amaratunga, said: "This is going to be a landmark piece of television, and one of the first instances in the last 10 years of authentic fashion programming for broadcast. It's also really exciting to be working with Channel 4 in such an innovative way and bringing the show to not only a mass UK audience, but also a global one through the VICE network and beyond."

Jonathan Rothery, Commissioning Editor, Music, said: "From Mods and Punks to Ravers and Emo Kids, street style cannot be separated from music. I'm very pleased i-D will be documenting these important moments in UK culture for us. Street Sound and Style will add yet more value to our weekly 'Music on 4' zone."
