DFL launches tape to film service

Digital Film Lab, the UK’s leading 35mm digital intermediate facility, are now offering a tape to film service in addition to DFL’s main core business of 35mm digital intermediates for features and the newly launched digital restoration for archive film.
Sales and Marketing Manager, Zahida Bacchus, said: “DFL’s decision to branch out in this area was based on having successfully completed nine productions via this route – including the latest Mike Figgis feature film, ‘Hotel’.
DFL are now geared up to produce 35mm digital intermediates from longform or shortform STD resolution or Hi-Def tape formats as well as from data file source. The technology behind the process was developed by DFL’s Copenhagen team. CEO Kris Kolodziejski said: “Using our existing hardware, DFL have devised a system to increase the resolution quality of any standard definition video format by up to a factor of three - a technique which was applied to ‘Hotel’. The end result produced a 1.5K transfer via Arrilaser to a 35mm negative with absolutely no loss of pixel information.”
