Raw 'unearthed' talent set for Portobello Film Festival

Described as “the wild side of Brit film” by London’s Metro, the Portobello Film festival will once again bring passionate, original and experimental filmmaking to the streets of London this summer.
From July 31 to August 18, over 500 shorts and features will be shown to the public in neighbourhood bars, restaurants, private gatherings and parks, where audiences can enjoy a variety of innovative and culturally diverse filmmaking.
The festival will focus on short, independent films by new English filmmakers, but will also feature other genres such as, music, drama, documentaries, and travel.
This year the audiences are in for a treat. The festival’s main emphasis is on pioneering music videos and work from film schools and art colleges.
It will also include everything from “A Tribute to Joe Strummer”, featuring rare and unseen Clash footage, new Iranian short filmmaking, and club films by Pinkypoos and Kinky Gerlinky to an extreme sports selection, an Italian evening and a contemporary South African programme.
Amongst the many other features planned for the festival are shorts from the Film Council and the Italian Cultural Institute, multimedia with BowieArt, and Red Dog, Bikini Bandits from California with music by Dee Dee Ramone, an Apple seminar on Final Cut Pro, Magna from Japan, a Big Music programme including Wall of Sound, Palm Pictures, Mute, Rough Trade, and a feature premiere of “The Last Minute”.
The festival will start off with a Gala Premiere at the Electric Cinema and climaxes with three days of Megascreen madness in one of Portobello’s local parks. A festival within a festival, it will include family films, classics and independent shorts.
Entry to the festival is free, and every film submitted is screened. Shorts or feature length on DVD and video are accepted, and preferred pieces are those which challenge cinematic boundaries ad inspire and motivate others to create film.
