Pioneer Productions Scoops Prestigious Award

Pioneer Productions has been honoured with the prestigious award for the Best Presentation of Science in an Environmental Issue at the European Science TV and New Media Festival for its one off special, Japan Tsunami: How It Happened.
The award was presented to Pioneer's Managing Director Kirstie McLure and Producer Richard Burke-Wardat at a ceremony held at the Ciencia Viva Science Centre in Lisbon, Portugal.
The award for Best Presentation of Science in an Environmental Issue recognises gripping production values and originality. The panel of five international scientists, television industry executives and science communicators looks for innovative story telling that reaches new audiences with illuminating science and technology.
Japan Tsunami: How it Happened, which was commissioned by C4, was chosen from an original selection of 46 entries.
Kirstie McLure, Managing Director, Pioneer Productions said: "We couldn't be more pleased that our production, Japan Tsunami: How it Happened, has been recognised by such a distinguished event. The tsunami that hit Japan in 2011 was one of the biggest ever recorded and one of the worst natural disasters the world has seen.
"We believed, there and then, that the scientific explanation behind the tsunami should be revealed to audiences world-wide and it is wonderful that our efforts to do just that have now been validated by our peers in the industry, for whom we have so much respect."
Japan Tsunami: How it Happened investigates the science behind the 2011 tsunami and earthquake, measuring a staggering 9.0 on the Richter scale, and the devastation it left behind. The programme follows professor of geological sciences Roger Bilham - who arrived in Japan days after the earthquake struck - as he sets off to view the destruction from the air.
Capturing some of the most extreme conditions on earth and documenting powerful and engaging stories, Pioneer's critically-acclaimed fast-turnaround shows have attracted the attention of audiences and award panels across the world.
Pioneer have previously produced Super Tornadoes (CH4), Oklahoma's Deadliest Tornadoes (NOVA), Mile Wide Tornado: Oklahoma Disaster (Discovery) and Meteor Strike: Fireball from Space (CH4), detailing the events as they happened.
