Union Members To Ballot On New Collective Agreement

Union members working on ITV regional news are balloting on a new collective agreement.
Talks on a new deal have been ongoing for 12 months, and have been complicated by job cuts during the period. BECTU managed to head off six post cuts, but there were still some redundancies.
Starting with eight separate agreements, covering terms and conditions for regional news staff, the negotiations resulted in a single national deal.
"We basically had to start from scratch", said BECTU's ITV Supervisory Officer Spencer MacDonald, "But we think we've come up with an agreement that protects most of the benefits our members have currently."
If the ballot goes in favour of accepting the deal, news staff across ITV will have harmonised terms and conditions for the first time. Any problems will then be settled at national level, rather than festering within local stations.
BECTU is giving members a free vote, and is making no recommendation on acceptance or rejection in the ballot, which closes on July 15th.
