Kylie images at the core of new multimedia work

Music video specialists Blink TV have shot and edited powerful video footage of Kylie Minogue for The Rambert Dance Company’s new work, '21'.
Blink have worked with Kylie on other recent projects including producing all the insert material for last year’s seminal 'Fever' tour, and a specially commissioned video for her Royal Variety performance.
They were approached by renowned Rambert choreographer Rafael Bonachela, who devised 21, an intense, provocative mixed media fusion of visuals, movement and expression in three sections, lasting 21 minutes.
Performed on a totally bare stage apart from the dancers, lighting and Kylie imagery, the piece’s second movement incorporates technology and physicality to create a potent and fluid visual.
MacDonald, Baker and Bonachela approached Blink’s Head of Production Marcus Viner with the idea to utilise drop-in gauze across the front of the stage for the second movement, and have Kylie’s image changing in size and shape, moving across the front, with eight dancers performing behind.
Viner recruited the expertise of video engineer Stuart Heaney for technical advice about screen and projector. The system was specified with touring and adaptability in mind for different venues and set ups.
They conducted tests in Rambert’s studios in Chiswick, West London, to establish the requisite equipment needed. The optimum size projection was to be 10 – 12 metres onto a 40 x 20 ft gauze, rear projected. Heaney recommended a Barco R18 ELM, supplied by XL Video.
