Call For Nominations For Jarman Award

Film London and Channel 4 launch this year's prestigious Jarman Award with a call for nominations.
The award, which will be announced at a special event at the Whitechapel Gallery in November, sees UK moving image artists contending for £10,000 in prize money and a Channel 4 broadcast commission.
Adrian Wootton, Chief Executive of Film London, said: "It is my pleasure to welcome the Film London Jarman Award back for its sixth edition, returning with our fantastic partners Channel 4 and the Whitechapel Gallery, with funding from Arts Council England. Rewarding innovation in moving image art encourages further experimentation and diversity, making this unique award an important part of the UK’s cultural landscape. The Jarman Award is special because it brings high profile as well as funding and significant exhibition platforms to outstanding artist film-makers working today."
The winner of the 2013 Film London Jarman Award will be awarded a £10,000 cash prize and a Channel 4broadcast commission for their Random Acts strand. While a further three Jarman shortlisted nominees will also receive a Channel 4 broadcast commission.
Over its five year history, the Jarman Award has selected artists who are at the cutting edge of this sector. Last year's Turner Prize shortlist of four artists featured three who were previously shortlisted for the Jarman Award, and past winners continue to enjoy wider recognition, through international exhibition and award acclaim.
In 2012 four artists — Jarman Award-winner James Richards along with shortlist nominees Shezad Dawood,Nathaniel Mellors and Brad Butler & Karen Mirza — were selected to produce works for Random Acts which are currently in development and will be completed in late 2013.
Previous Jarman Award-winners have completed and broadcast their Channel 4 commissions: 2010 winnerEmily Wardill's films, collectively titled Carlyle's Hands, aired in 2011 and are available to view via the Random Acts website. More information on 2009 winner Lindsay Seers's commissioned films are on the Channel 4 website and 2008 winner Luke Fowler's films can be viewed here. Films from 2011 winners Anja Kirchner and David Panos will be broadcast in the coming months.
Since 2008, the Jarman Award has given recognition and support to artists working with moving image whose work resists conventional definition, encompassing innovation and excellence. The award is inspired by maverick avant-garde film-maker Derek Jarman, whose cutting-edge experimental film works still shock and inspire across generations.
The Jarman Award is unique in granting both financial assistance and a commission to produce new work to be broadcast on national television. The purpose of the award is open-ended: an investment in the career of an individual enabling a period of experimentation without pressure.
As in previous years, representatives from the art world, including commissioners, artists, cinema programmers and curators are being invited to suggest potential recipients of the 2013 Award. Any mid-career artist film-maker can be put forward for this annual prize.
A Jarman Award national tour of events and screenings, profiling the shortlisted artists, will take place in the run up to the announcement of this year’s winner. This will culminate in a dedicated weekend event at Whitechapel Gallery, featuring all the shortlisted artists.
Film London will again invite an impressive judging panel, chaired by Stuart Comer, Curator of Film at the Tate Modern.
