Director Rejects Honour From The Queen
It has been revealed that a well-known British film director and producer turned down an honour from the Queen.
Sir Alfred Hitchock refused to accept a CBE in 1962, but went on to accept a knighthood from Her Majesty four months before his death in 1980.
A list of people who declined an honour between 1951 and 1999, and who have since died, has been published for the first time. This comes after a year of battling and follows a BBC Freedom of Information request.
Hitchcock, the man who fashioned for himself a distinctive and recognisable directorial style was amongst 277 others who rejected a royal honour.
Others how rejected honours include actor Trevor Howard, star of Brief Encounter, he turned down a CBE in 1982 meanwhile actor Robert Morley accepted an OBE in 1957 but rejected a knighthood in 1975.
