Permanent Digital Cinema For Whitby

One of Yorkshire's most popular tourist destinations, Whitby, will have a permanent, state of the art digital cinema, it has been announced today.
Scarborough Council will invest in projection equipment as part of a pilot project to extend cinema provision across the UK.
Last Year, Cine Yorkshire installed digital cinema projection and screening equipment at Whitby Pavilion as part of a £400,000 initiative established by the UK Film Council. It was aimed at bringing a high quality digital cinema experience to communities in the UK.
This has enabled local audiences and visitors to access the latest film releases for the first time, whilst providing the venue with technical and programming expertise.
It also allowed them to test the market before committing to a longer-term investment.
Known for its historic fishing port, narrow cobbled streets and a gothic fascination with literary legend Bram Stoker's Dracula.
Whitby Pavilion, situated on the stunning Cliffside overlooking the Bay, has welcomed 7300 visitors to 300 screenings at the cinema since it opened in October 2010.
The programme has included family favourites, cinematic classics and special events, with highlights such as the Bram Stoker Film Festival, a 3D weekend, National Film Schools Week, the film strand of the Whitby 1940s Weekend and outreach screenings from Bradford International Film Festival and Bradford Animation Festival.
Jeremy Hartill, Executive Manager for Whitby Pavilion, said: "This is great news for the people of Whitby and means residents will not have to travel great distances to enjoy a modern digital cinema experience. The pilot project proved that, with movies such as The King's Speech packing out the theatre, cinema can be sustained and be successful in the town."
