DRG Premieres New Documentaries

Production company DRG has confirmed the significant acquisition of three major new primetime documentary specials BP: Eye of the Storm and The Tea Party and the American Right for BBC Television and Haiti Miracle Baby for Channel 4.
The new acquisitions were coupled with confirmations of pre-sales in Canada and Europe ahead of their MIPCOM premiere.
Patrick Roberts, SVP – International Sales at DRG said: "These three exceptional and extraordinary films tap into current world events and have generated unprecedented international interest. They confirm DRG’s place as a primary destination for the very best in world documentaries.
"Over the past twelve months we have experienced a tremendous demand for high-quality topical documentary specials and today’s acquisitions are quickly establishing equal success. We have already signed pre-sales with CBC News Network in Canada and DR in Denmark, with CBC picking up BP: Eye of the Storm and DR both BP: Eye of the Storm and Haiti Miracle Baby."
BP: Eye of the Storm is a fascinating one-hour special from BBC Productions for BBC One, examining the quest for oil, money and power. The film investigates how the blowout and the ongoing public relations battle between the US administration and BP is just the latest battle in the struggle for wealth and power that has surrounded oil for decades and continues to fuel global rivalries.
The Tea Party and the American Right is a unique one-hour special from the BAFTA-winning UK indie Renegade Pictures (Inside Incredible Athletes) for BBC Two. As America heads to the 2010 midterms, it has seen small local groups of Tea Party protestors evolve into a national movement. Journalist and broadcaster, Andrew Neil will go on a road trip through America to investigate the Tea Party movement that is claimed to be reshaping Republican and American politics. He will explore the underlying concerns driving the movement and will try to show both what unites and divides this ever growing coalition. He will also try to discover what lasting political impact it could really have.
On 12th January 2010 will be the one-year anniversary of the devastating Haiti Earthquake. Haiti Miracle Baby, from Sundance-winning UK indie Roast Beef (Afghan Star) for Channel 4, is the iconic story of a tiny baby found in the rubble of a paediatric ward in Port au Prince two days after the earthquake. Her skull was burnt through and her brain was at risk of an infection that would kill her. A top trauma specialist and filmmaker Inigo Gilmore evacuate the ‘miracle baby’ to Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. Originally abandoned by her parents, her mother arrives in London. The documentary challenges the morality of returning a child to its mother, when a safer and healthier life could now be in reach.
Earlier in August, DRG appointed Diane Rankin as SVP of Acquisitions and confirmed the strategic expansion of its factual portfolio. Recent acquisition deals have included unique ‘first-look’ and ‘development’ deals with Roast Beef and with True Vision, along with the international launches of high-profile documentaries including BBC commissions Museum of Life, Pakistan Police and The Seven Ages Of... series.
