Soviet Science Create New BBC One Ident Music

On the back of composing the official BBC World Cup theme 2010, Soviet Science were commissioned to compose the latest in the family of BBC One idents.
Aired on Friday night for the first time before the Uraguay vs France World Cup game, the ident will continue to run as part of the family of idents we have come to know whenever we watch BBC One - from motorcyclists on the Wall of Death to skating penguins, helicopters to surfers - this one adds a new dimension with a football stadium crowd turning their coloured flag waving Mexican wave in to the BBC One logo whilst chanting the famous BBC One tune.
The composition started with Composer/Producer Scuta Salamanca attending the shoot at Tottenham Hotspur Football ground and getting the crowd to perform between takes. As with all the idents in the family the BBC One nemonic was used and is chanted by the crowd.
Scuta then created a fanfare orchestral piece integrating football crowd sounds from the shoot, such as air horns, whistles, cheers and drums, to create this hybrid music and sound design anthem.
Soviet Science add colour to World Cup Coverage with the soundtrack "Rainbow Nation."
Soviet Science synths wizard, Scuta Salamanca, has written and produced "Rainbow Nation", the music currently being heard on all BBC TV and radio World Cup coverage.
A blend of Scuta's own prog/pop sound and a sample from a traditional South African song, the track is a mash-up of two cultures that captures the spirit and excitement of this year's World Cup.
With drums and synths provided by Scuta's band, The Dallas Guild, the talents of the London South African Singers were also called upon for the vocal, which was recorded at Konk Studios, owned by legendary Kinks front-man Ray Davies, and mixed at Soviet Science's studios.
Scuta added: "It was amazing to get the chance to work with a traditional South African choir and make a track that's such a hybrid of different styles."
To coincide with the launch of the tournament, "Rainbow Nation" is now available to download from iTunes through BBC Music/Soviet Science as a Soviet Science Mix.
