Tom & Mark Reveal One Of Coke's Secret Ingredients

Tom & Mark have drawn inspiration from the world of comic books for their ice cool "Coke Secret Ingredient Swelter Stopper" spot.
The new initiative, being revealed in North America, but possibly extending worldwide, is set to target the younger generation and plays on the unknown 'Secret Ingredient' that Coke often refers to.
The story is of two hot and bothered comic monsters, fighting it out in a sweltering city scene. But it's not the widespread destruction and mayhem that would expect when two giant monsters are battling it out that makes the city's inhabitants run for their lives moreover it's the incredible heat of the swelteringly hot day that is agitating everyone. The only thing that can cool them down is a lorry full of Coke, which leaves them chillin' to a down beat vibe.
The commercial is an animated collage of different comic styles from Manga to Marvel, but according to Tom & Mark trying to create a look that could have been made by cutting up a stack of old comic books isn't as simple as it seems.
With a tight schedule and a ton of artwork to create the brothers immersed themselves in the design stage of the project, creating endless creature possibilities before settling on our two hero characters. Tom and Mark worked together with comic book artists to create character designs with a truly authentic comic book look and much of the fun was in this design process.
Each element was animated individually with each scene assembled in layers to show depth and shadows of the elements. The animation varies from smooth and stylish to slightly clunky and raw to give the spot the effect of having been created from individual comic book frames.
Tom & Mark commented: "It was important to us that the spot felt as tangible and real as possible, so there's a lot of work that goes into just making stuff not perfect. We wanted the style of animation to be quite clunky and rough to fit with the comic book aesthetic so we had to be quite brutal with some of the animation sequences, chopping them up to make them less smooth."
