KEO Takes Theroux To Japan In First Commission For BBC4

KEO Films has announced a foray into Japanese culture with two new commissions for BBC4, bringing 'In Search of Wabi Sabi' and 'Japan Fish' to BBC4's Japan season.
'In Search of Wabi Sabi' examines novelist Marcel Theroux's fascination with wabi sabi, a theory of Japanese aesthetics in which imperfection and transience are the touchstone of beauty.
The series, shot entirely in HD, follows Theroux as he sets out for Japan to test his understanding of wabi sabi against reality.
'Fish! A National Obsession' joins the journey of Charles Rangeley Wilson, who fronted 'Accidental Angler' for BBC2, in an attempt to appreciate the Japanese people through their mutual love of fish. From their reverential love of jewel-like koi to the seemingly barbaric world of scientific whaling, Japanese culture is full of marine references. Charles hopes that his shared passion for fishing will help him unlock the secrets of this unfamiliar world.
Andrew Palmer, Creative Director, KEO Films, said: "KEO has a great reputation for high-quality documentaries which expose viewers to an array of places and diverse subjects, and these two films are testament to our expertise in this area."
KEO has had a string of successful documentaries looking at various cultures round the world, which include the recently aired 'Would You Eat And Elephant?' (C4), which followed award-winning restauranteur Fergus Henderson and acclaimed chef Jeremy Lee as they travelled around the continents eating, or in some cases NOT eating, a variety of exotic and challenging dishes from beetles and maggot-infested cheese, to monkey and elephant. Other notable productions include 2007's 'Medicine Men Go Wild' (C4) and the BAFTA-nominated 'Meet the Natives' (C4).
'Fish! A National Obsession' is executive produced by Andrew Palmer for Keo Films and directed by Gavin Searle. 'In Search of Wabi Sabi' is executive produced by Claire Whalley for KEO Films and directed by Richard Alwyn. Both shows were commissioned by Emma Wallis for BBC4.
