Principal Photography Commences On 'Brideshead Revisited'

Principal photography on the new film 'Brideshead Revisited' has begun in Yorkshire.

The 11-week shoot includes five weeks at Castle Howard as well locations in Oxford, London, Venice and Morocco. Produced by Ecosse Films for BBC Films, 2 entertain, the UK Film Council, and Miramax Films, Brideshead Revisited is directed by Julian Jarrold ('Becoming Jane', 'Kinky Boots'), from an adapted screenplay by Andrew Davies ('Bleak House' - TV) and Jeremy Brock ('The Last King of Scotland'), from Evelyn Waughs 1945 celebrated novel of the same name.

Brideshead Revisited is an evocative and poignant story of forbidden love and the loss of innocence, set in pre-war England when privileged aristocracy fell into decline. The story begins in 1925 at Oxford, when Charles Ryder (Matthew Goode) is befriended by the louche and flamboyant Sebastian Flyte (Ben Whishaw), son of Lord Marchmain, and is quickly seduced by an exciting new world of money, glamour and outrageous behaviour. When he is invited to 'Brideshead' the Flyte familys magnificent ancestral home, Charles becomes infatuated with Julia (Hayley Atwell), Sebastians beautiful sister. But as Charless emotional relationship with the Marchmain family deepens, he finds himself continually at odds with their deepest family bond, that of their overpowering Catholic faith.

Director Julian Jarrold commented: Im excited by the challenge of bringing Waughs heartbreaking love story to the big screen and to a new generation. Jeremy Brocks screenplay brings out the passion and drama of Waughs novel, which is the last of the classics never to have been filmed. Im also delighted with the exceptional British cast we have on board.

The cast is led by Matthew Goode (Match Point) as Charles Ryder, Ben Whishaw (Perfume: The Story of a Murderer) as Sebastian Flyte and Hayley Atwell (Cassandras Dream) as Julia Flyte. Emma Thompson (Stranger Than Fiction) and Michael Gambon (Amazing Grace) play Lord and Lady Marchmain.

Joining the cast are Ed Stoppard (The Pianist), Felicity Jones (Northanger Abbey TV), Jonathan Cake (Mosley) and Greta Scacchi (The Player, White Mischief).

The film is produced by Kevin Loader and Ecosse Films Robert Bernstein and Douglas Rae.

The experienced film team working with Julian Jarrold include: Director of Photography Jess Hall, Production Designer Alice Normington, Costume Designer Eimer Ni Mhaoldomhnaigh, Editor Chris Gill, Composer Adrian Johnston and Hair and Make-up Artist Roseann Samuel.

Brideshead Revisited is an Ecosse Films Production in association with BBC Films, 2 entertain, the UK Film Councils Premiere and Development Funds, Screen Yorkshire and Miramax Films, who will distribute the film in North America and in the UK through BVI for 2 entertain. Worldwide sales are being handled by Dreamachine.
