CHANNEL 4 CREW FILM EIGER DEATH PLUNGE

A CHANNEL 4 television crew filmed two British mountaineers as they fell nearly 2,000ft to their deaths while climbing the north face of the Eiger in the Swiss Alps.
The fall was recorded by a Channel 4 team who were on the nearby Kleine Scheidegg mountain making a programme for the documentary series ‘To the Ends of the Earth’, about Nazis who climbed the Eiger in the Thirties. Swiss police said a copy of their film had been given to investigators to try to establish the precise cause of the accident.
Kurt Amacher, Head of the rescue team said he was angry that Channel 4 had refused to hand over the original film. However, a Channel 4 spokesman said that it was company policy to keep original film and that they did not intend to broadcast the footage or to pass it on to any other television company.
British Mountaineers Matthew Hayes and Philip O’Sullivan who were roped together both died in the fall.
