Mix engineer Hugo Nicolson relied on Solid State Logic’s XLogic Multichannel Compressor to enhance the surround mix for the new Warner Bros. Pictures release 'Ocean’s Twelve'.
Purchased from Guitar Center Pro, Platinum Audio Rentals’ Sean Fudge recommended the Xlogic to Nicolson and the result was pure movie magic. “The XLogic Compressor is great because it is designed from the ground up for surround mixing,” said Nicolson. “In the past, I would have had to employ multiple stereo compressors and that situation was always complicated and took more time. When I would go back to recall the mix, I was always dealing with re-setting all those little buttons and knobs and that was a drag. With the XLogic, everything is right there in front of you and the settings are easy to recall.” The XLogic Multichannel Compressor unit is a 2U rack-mounting six-channel compressor. It utilises the classic SSL center compressor design elements within a SuperAnalogue design topology, bringing the dual benefits of spectacular surround audio performance with a universally acclaimed compressor characteristic. “One of the features I like best is the Circular ‘Max’ display that shows which channel is contributing the most to the side chain, giving me a clear, instantaneous indication of which channel is driving the compressor,” Nicolson continued. “With the VU meter available to figure out the overall gain reduction, I can see how much the overall compression is kicking all the individual channels from the LED lights. This is very useful because when it sounds right, it also looks right.” The XLogic Multichannel Compressor features separate 5-channel and LFE channel compression controls allowing separate treatment of LFE signals that typically require different attack and release characteristics. Separate Trim controls for L, C, R and S channels provide different thresholds for each input, while the Dual Stereo mode enables either different compression to be applied to the surround channels, or for the unit to be used as separate four channel and stereo compressors.
