THE MOVING IMAGE STRATEGY SET FOR WIGTOWN LAUNCH

THE MOVING Image Strategy for Dumfries & Galloway will be launched at the 3rd Scottish Book Town Festival in Wigtown on September 23, 2001.
The Strategy is a major part of Dumfries & Galloway Council's continuing work to ensure that local people receive the best possible benefits from cultural, economic, educational and marketing initiatives in the region.
Belle Doyle, the Council’s Film Officer, said: “The Moving Image Strategy was developed in response to growing interest in the role of film and television in the lives of people in the region. Local interest has been heightened by the amount of film and television production that has been going on in the region this year.”
Scottish Writer and Director Peter Mullans feature film ‘Magdalene’ was filmed entirely on location in and around Dumfries this summer, while Zenith Entertainment are completing the second series of ‘2000 Acres of Sky in Port Logan’ for BBC1.
Two films made in the region were premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival this year, ‘Rivers and Tides’ and ‘The Toon Fair’.
A recent local initiative, a 24-hour video-making competition called Galloway Video Challenge successfully attracted a number of budding film-makers to the region.
The Moving Image Strategy gives an overall view of the global moving image industry, and then discusses ways in which Dumfries & Galloway could benefit in terms of economic regeneration, social inclusion, life long learning and quality of life.
From marketing the region as a film location to looking at ways in which film education and training could enhance the prospects of school leavers, the Moving Image Strategy shows how the region can make use of its full potential in terms of this huge global industry.
The Strategy has been developed after extensive consultation with moving image professional, Scottish Screen, the Film Council and other national and local bodies.
