Leading names in fashion & broadcasting to design new apprenticeships

Some of the UK's leading names in fashion – including Roksanda, Burberry, Marios Schwab, Mulberry and Jonathan Saunders – along with the BBC, ITV and SKY from broadcasting have announced (23 October) that they will help design apprenticeships in their sectors. Skills Minister Nick Boles announced that three groups of creative industries companies have been selected to work on the Trailblazers scheme, the new employer-led apprenticeships that enable companies to design standards that best meet the skills needs of their industries. This will replace the current apprenticeship frameworks in England by 2016-17. The announcement follows the government’s invitation for applications by groups of companies to work on a new apprenticeship standard for an occupation or job role they needed. A minimum of ten companies had to apply. The new Creative Industry trailblazers include: A Fashion Studio Assistant trailblazer, led by employer Roksanda Illincic, with membership from fashion luminaries such as Jasper Conran, Mulberry and Burberry, assisted by the British Fashion Council. The role will supply urgently needed new talent at the business end of the industry. A TV Production Assistant trailblazer, led by Fountain Studios (currently hosting the X Factor) and including representatives from BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Sky as well as smaller companies like Resource Productions who will work together to create a new route into TV production. A postgraduate level TV Outside Broadcast Engineer trailblazer, led by major players in UK Outside Broadcast – including BBC Television, ITV Group, Sky News, CTV, Telegenic and SIS Live who cover some of the biggest outside broadcasts in the world like Glastonbury, Champions, Premier League and Wimbledon. These ‘Phase 3 Trailblazers’ are the third wave of companies chosen to work on the new apprenticeship standard, led and designed by employers to be rigorous and stretching. The new trailblazers put employers in the driving seat, able to define the assessment and qualities around what it takes to be a professional in an occupational job role. All three have asked Creative Skillset to work with them, and we look forward to supporting the companies driving the Fashion, TV Production and TV Outside Broadcast apprenticeships.
